Massachusetts State House is dedicated.
January 11, 1798
Architect: Charles Bulfinch. Designed in the Federal style and modeled after Somerset House in London, it is located at 24 Beacon Street. The ceremony includes the transfer the Sacred Cod from the Old State House. The new building initially features a wood-shingled dome (sheathed in copper by Paul Revere & Son in 1802, painted gold in 1861, gilded in 1874, and painted gray in 1942 during World War II) that is topped by a pine cone sculpture to symbolize the importance of logging industry in Maine, then part of Massachusetts. The exterior bricks are painted white in 1825, then yellow, white again, and finally restored in 1928.
